Watch the Practicing Rhythm Guitar online guitar lesson by Robben Ford from Rhythm Revolution

As far a ways to approach practice, become better at developing yourself as a rhythm guitar player, it's really something that needs to be done in a band situation. You're not going to develop that by yourself on your own. The whole point of rhythm guitar is to be an integrated piece of a musical puzzle so you need to play with people. What you play is affecting other people, and what other people are playing should be affecting you. You really need to dive into a situation where you can use this stuff. For me, I did it in a blues band, in blues bands. And that was just my basic blues style of rhythm guitar playing which was not all that sophisticated. But later, joining the L.A. Express and working with Joni Mitchell and finally being in a situation where I had a lot to learn, I was learning trial by fire. I was on a bandstand with musicians playing this music whether I could play it or not. It's the best way to learn and those around me who were older and more experienced told me that this was the only way I was going to learn. That I would not learn it at home, you have to be out here doing it. So get in a band as soon as possible, find people to play with as soon as possible.
