Watch the Dynamics online guitar lesson by Robben Ford from Rhythm Revolution

A word about dynamics in music. Some of you may have heard the joke when one musician asks the guitar player "can't you play with dynamics" and the guitar player says "I'm playing as loud as I can". It's one of the final frontiers it seems, is to actually learn how to exercise the use of dynamics, meaning volume. It pretty much comes down to how loud you are or how soft you are. It's important that you are playing with other people and listening to other people so that you are reacting to something. You're not just laying something down like it or not. You're integrated and being polite. You're in a group situation and you want harmony within that group situation. Everything that you do is based on what is going on around you. You have to be listening and you might have to turn down in order to hear what other people are playing. So throughout the course of these twelve studies I hope that I demonstrate fairly clearly the use of dynamics in music. There are instances where I'm playing very soft and instances where it's a little stronger. I never get terribly loud, especially as a ryhthm guitar player, there is little call for it. Something that's loud is going to be taking front stage so that's not going to be so much rhythm guitar. Rhythm guitar is behind and supporting. I hope that I can demonstrate that well enough so you can see that.
