Notice once again the pulsing movement with your left hand fingers that we use on our D chords to give us a muted sound, or more exactly, to cut off the sound of the ringing strings, giving us a defined, staccato rhythmic figure. In contrast, when playing the G chords we are strumming freely with no muting to bring out a more flowing, full sound.
