Watch the The ii V I IV Progression online guitar lesson by Vicki Genfan from Rhythm Makeover: Vicki Genfan
This progression is a ii-V-I-IV in the key of A. Our chords are Bm-E-A-D.The first approach is very folky, in the style of James Taylor or Gordon Lightfoot. We’ll be playing in first position and using quite a bit of movement within each chord to pick out a simple but very pretty melody on the 1st and 2nd strings. The second approach takes on the rhythmic pattern of something a horn section might play. It’s a 16th note, syncopated pattern and we’re using chords that are more often used in jazz or funk than folk or rock.
