Watch the Bairagi Bhairav Jam online guitar lesson by Fareed Haque from Gaga for Raga
What I love about the way Indrajit plays - and this a characteristic of all great South-Asian musicians - is the way the raga is explored through motivic development. Simple motives start out and slowly develop into more and more complex and melodious ideas. This is very dramatic and builds tension and excitement.
In my little jam for the most part I stay within the raga but leave it occasionally and that gives a jazzier sound to my improvisation. Please try each ornament with bends and also left-hand glissandi. Then try them with a slide and then think of some way to play them that I haven't!
Have you tried them with a fox? Have you tried them in a box?
Here we play a composition in Bairagi Bhairav, introducing a unique meend (bend) and gamak. Hear the improvisation and jamming within the structure of this popular morning raga.
