Octaves - Soloing Concept 4 is a video guitar lesson presented by Chris Buono and is sourced from Focus On: Funk Guitar.
A great funk solo usually, at some point, makes ample use of two- and three-note ideas. A great way to start learning how and what to play in that regard is with octaves and that's exactly what we're going to do in this lesson. We'll be working with two different fingering shapes that all have a string in-between the notes we're playing. As a result the muting techniques you're working on will once again be needed here. The bottom half of the neck has you playing octaves off the sixth and fifth strings that cover two frets of neck real estate while the top half extends the reach one more fret with octave shapes off the fourth and third strings that are three frets long. To get to know these shapes we'll play through Exs. 1 and 2, which are simple lick ideas derived Am blues and A Dorian scales respectively. From there your octave playing will be good and ready for the jams in Section 4.
