Watch the 12 AM: Lead 2 online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Rock Guitar 6: Soloing Principles

12 AM: Lead 2 - Breakdown is a video guitar lesson presented by Andy Aledort and is sourced from Jam Night Vol. 2.

The sixths played over the initial D and B chords fall on the G and high E strings, but I then switch to sixths fretted on the D and B strings when playing over the A and G chords in order to attain a fatter sound. Bars 1-4 of the solo sit squarely in 12th position on E minor pentatonic (E G A B D), and the rhythm of the lines played here are executed in eighth-note triplets, ala Stevie Ray Vaughan. For bars 5-7 of the solo, I switch to lines based on E major pentatonic (E F# G# B C#); it is standard practice for blues guitarists to balance minor pentatonic lines against major pentatonic lines as each scale complements the other so well. In bar 8, I return to E minor pentatonic. The first time through the B-to-A progression, sliding sixths reappear, but for the second time through, I bring in country-style oblique bends played on the top two strings. I then wrap the solo up by switching from country-esque oblique bends to E major pentatonic and then E minor pentatonic, bringing all of the different ingredients together.
