Watch the Soloing Within Chords online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Rock Guitar 10: Advanced Soloing Approaches

Soloing Within Chords - Concept 17 is a video guitar lesson presented by David Grissom and is sourced from Open Road Guitar.

Let's talk about soloing within chords using some of the shapes we just covered in the last section and lend themselves to a really fat way of soloing. You can also really help rhythm guitar playing too. It is a really neat way to find some economy of motion within the chord by just lifting up a finger or two. As you can see in the examples I'm really just lifting one finger and using hybrid picking, I'm not moving around the fingerboard at all but I am getting a lot of harmonic movement. The first example is in the key of B. I really like how I can use the open B string here as well as I will always look for an open string I can use. In the second example I am in the key of E and here I'm really going to utilize the hybrid picking and get a very percussive sound that I use quite a bit. To get the notes as choppy as I do it's a combination of the hybrid picking and my left hand. Once I play the chord I am lifting my fingers up gently to help mute the notes. I really feel this is an excellent concept for you to investigate.
