Watch the Heavy Machinery online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Jazz Guitar 9: Advanced Lick Vocabulary

Heavy Machinery - Lick 45 is a video guitar lesson presented by James Hogan and is sourced from 50 Jazz Rock Licks You MUST Know.

Allan Holdsworth is a genius. He's also an absolutely terrifying guitarist, composer and musician. Allan's technical prowess, impeccable time feel, and unique tone, are why he's considered a legend in the world of jazz fusion. Which is odd because Allan never really wanted to play guitar! After hearing John Coltrane as a kid, he actually wanted to play saxophone. Fortunately, Allan's father bought him a guitar instead and the rest is history.

This lick is a longer phrase based around the A Half-Whole Diminished, A Melodic Minor and A Minor Pentatonic scales. It's one of those licks that usually stops people in their tracks the 1st time they hear it. It's unmistakably Holdsworth. Also, though Allan is widely recognized for his fluid legato technique, this lick combines both legato playing and alternate picking. It's a lick that both sounds great and serves the purpose of helping us learn to fluidly combine alternate picking with hammer-ons and pull offs. You can hear this one on the tune "Joint Ventures" from the album Heavy Machinery."
