Watch the The Miles/Robben Thing online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Jazz Guitar 9: Advanced Lick Vocabulary

The Miles/Robben Thing - Lick 44 is a video guitar lesson presented by James Hogan and is sourced from 50 Jazz Rock Licks You MUST Know.

Miles Davis is one of the most important figures in jazz history. He was a highly acclaimed trumpeter, bandleader and cultural icon, who is also considered by most historians as the person who put the jazz rock fusion genre on the map through the success of his albums "In A Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew." These two albums featured some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world; all of whom soon left Miles' band to form their own enormously successful and important fusion groups. Of course, Miles continued on with his own bands and constantly redefined himself throughout the rest of his career. His influence on the music world and in pop culture is absolutely astonishing.

This lick is actually a Miles chord trick via Robben Ford. It involves harmonizing the five notes of E minor pentatonic (E - G - A - B - D) with two triad shapes. This lick works great over a static bass note groove where you can imply whatever harmony you wish. I use this all the time!
