Watch the Melodic Chord Lick online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Jazz Guitar 9: Advanced Lick Vocabulary

Melodic Chord Lick - Lick 43 is a video guitar lesson presented by Tom Wolfe and is sourced from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know.

The middle 4 bars of the blues can be problematic when trying to play over the diminished chord in the 6th bar of the blues form. This lick emphasizes the use of the diminished chord as it moves up minor thirds with rhythmic intensity. Because the diminished chord is a symmetrical chord (all minor 3rd intervals), every minor 3rd movement up or down the neck (three frets) the voicing remains the same chord. The melody notes of the chords could be played as a single note lick. This is the goal of a very successful Wes Montgomery style solo.
