The approaches for re-harmonization introduced in our last two lessons, backcycling, relative major and minors and tritone substitution helped me in outlining a general harmonic framework for my arrangement of "Oh, Susanna" later in this lesson, but my final choices were always made with lots of experimentation by ear and intuition and were, of course, always governed by the melody.
Notice that the chord substitutions and additions (Cmaj7, B7, Bb7, Am7) in the first two measures produced by backcycling and tritone substitution could also have been discovered by experimenting with a chromatically descending bass line and chromatic approach chords.
