Watch the Hand Jive online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Jazz Guitar 5: Lick Lexicon

Hand Jive - Lick 33 is a video guitar lesson presented by James Hogan and is sourced from 50 Jazz Rock Licks You MUST Know.

John Scofield is one of my very favorite guitarists. He's a player who's firmly rooted in the jazz tradition but isn't afraid to turn on a distortion pedal and rock out either. He also has one of the most recognizable guitar styles in jazz. While "Sco's" fusion playing in the mid 70‘s with the Billy Cobham/George Duke Band put him on the map, his 80‘s era solo albums and his work with Miles Davis' Group made him a jazz rock legend.

"Sco's" discography is as diverse as his playing. From traditional jazz, to blues, to funk, to fusion, to jam, Scofield covers all the bases. My favorite type of player.

This lick is from Scofield's album "Hand Jive." It's the opening lick to the song "I'll Take Les" and it features Sco's signature use of wide intervals and his brilliant phrasing. This lick based around B Dorian on the album though I chose to put it in A Dorian (A - B - C -D - E - F# - G - A) here for no particular reason. Enjoy!
