Notice that the shape of the 1st inversion minor 7th chord in Figure 5 in Lesson 6 is identical to the shape of a root position major 6th chord. In fact, this same shape can also imply a major 9th in second inversion! You may then ask, "But how will I know what to call a shape, or what inversion I should use as I read the chord symbols?". Well, don't worry (be happy). The answer is simple, though not always obvious; it's about context! In practice, chords don't exist in a vacuum as you might expect after perusing some chord "dictionaries".
