Our next chord arrangement is going to be for the song "Peg O' My Heart", a great old classic standard. Let's take a look at the music.
The first chord is Cmaj for the first 2 measures, so we'll reference our Cmaj section of the chord vocabulary. We notice the first melody note is an E note, and the next is a G ascending from E, so we'll go to the chord melody vocabulary Cmaj and find the low E note Cmaj chord, which is Cmaj7. You'll see this melody is 8th notes, so it moves a little quickly. The next note is G, the next is A (still under Cmaj). So we're going to choose to use those notes as single notes, because the melody moves so quickly. This is part of the creative options we talked about earlier. Those are the first three notes - chord, then single notes. now we come up to a B note in the Cmaj, so in your chord guide you will find Cmaj7. So the first melodic phrase goes like this... The next note is A, with the prevailing chord being Cmaj, so under the reference guide you'll find C6. The next note is G with Cmaj, so Cma7. The next note is E, which was our starting note with Cmaj, so that's Cmaj7 chord. So the first two measures go like this. Now the third measure, the prevailing chord is Ddom7 for two measures. So we go to the D7 section of the chord vocabulary, the melody note is an F#, so we look up the chord under D7 and we find Ddom7. Again, we have the 8th notes which move pretty quickly, so we'll use the next two notes, the A and the C, as single notes. Then ascending to the high E, the prevailing chord is D7, so under D7 we find this. So that measure sounds like this. The next note is a D note, still with a D7, so in the chord melody vocabulary under D7 we find this. The next note is C, so under D7 chord vocabulary we find this. Then comes A, so we use this... Now also, on A we can also use this D7, so you have two options. So either is fine but I'll choose this one, because we're moving to a G7 with an A note, which is right here. Under your chord vocabulary under G7 you'll find this G7 with the A on top. Again, we have 8th notes, so we're going to do a chord, a G note as a single note, a D note as a single note, and back to the chord for the A. One more time. The next measure is the same exact melody and chord as the previous measure. So G7 with the A on top, G single note, D single note, an A note with a G7 chord. so in your G7 section you find this chord. So now let's take the first six measures of this song.
Now again, the next measures we go to Cmaj for the prevailing chord with a high E on top. It's ascending from the previous A note. A lot of notes are coming up here, so we're going to do a chord on the downbeat, and single notes for the rest of the measure. Those are 8th notes under C, now an Amin7 with an E note on top, so go to your chord vocabulary under Amin with the E note on top, and you'll find this. Now the rest will be single notes. So let's do just that measure, since it's a little tricky. See, that doesn't sound jumbled or confused, it sounds clear and we're playing chord melody. The next one is Dmin with a G note on top, so we go to our Dmin section of the chord vocabulary and find the chord with the G note on top, DmSus. The next notes are outside of the scale, the G#, so we'll play it as a single note, and since it's a fast moving phrase, we'll hit the chord and play the next 3 notes as single notes. The next chord is a G7 with a G note on top, so in the G7 section of the guide we find this chord. Now the F# is outside of the scale, so we hit a single note. And because the phrase moves quickly I'm going to make the creative decision to play the next 3 notes as single notes. So it sounds like this. So let's take the first half of the song and play it through nice and slow, focusing on cleanliness and good transitions.
Now we move on to the second half. We come across the same two bars in C as was at the beginning. So C with an E on top. C, then a single note on the G and the A, and we hit the chord in your chord reference guide under Cmaj with the B on top. Then an A note on top with the C as the prevailing chord gives us the C6, the G note on top with the Cmaj gives us Cmaj7. And the E note descending from the G gives us this chord. Then to the D7 with the F# melody under your chord reference guide under D7 gives us. And since it's a fast moving melody we'll use the single notes again. D7 with the F#, single note A, single note C, and a chord on the high E with the D7. Again if you reference your chord vocabulary under D7 you find this. And then a D note on top, still D7 as prevailing chord... C note on top... A note on top... Moves on to the G7 again with the A on top. And again the single notes. A note on top, G7 chord, single note G, single note D, back to the chord with the A note, the G7 chord. The next measure is the same thing, but we're coming up to the end of the song, so it's a little bit different. So G7 is the prevailing chord, an A note is on top in the melody, so we get our chord using our guide under G7, single notes on G and D, hit the chord on the A because it's a fast moving phrase. The next note is a G, we're going to hit that single, then we go up to a high E on a G7, and then the final chord is a C with a C note on top, so that last two bars sounds like this. So let's play the whole song through now, nice and slow, not worrying about timing, just about cleanliness and clean transitions between the chords, and when we do hit those single notes, we make sure they're as clear as a bell.
