"Kid Gloves" was the title track from my first album for GRP records, 1992.
Prior to being on GRP records, I was on Warner Bros records, and I was on MCA records. While on those labels I had complete creative freedom. They would say, "Larry, you're on the schedule for XX release", and I would go into the studio and make a record.
I was assigned to GRP records because MCA records had bought that company, but I took the same approach - my first album for GRP was on the schedule, so I went into the studio and started recording and creating what I wanted. I sent the first four tracks to the people at GRP and they didn't like them at all. They actually called me on the phone and said, "Larry what are you doing? This doesn't sound like a GRP record." I said, "No, it sounds like a Larry Carlton record." But they really wanted me to give them a more GRP, smooth-jazz-oriented record, so they put the project on hold until I finished the smooth jazz record. Well, that first recording eventually came to be Renegade Gentleman, but that's how the song and album "Kid Gloves" was born.
So let me play for you the first song I wrote for my GRP experience.
