Suspending The Root - Lick 23 is a video guitar lesson presented by Ray Nijenhuis and is sourced from 50 Western Swing Licks You MUST Know.

When you're playing with just a bass player or any other instrument that provides the root of a chord, you may want to avoid playing that root or at least suspend it. Think about it: you're not really adding much by playing a note that's already there, right? The great Jimmy Wyble who started out as a western swing player and later became a very well respected jazz player was a master at coming up with long melodic lines suspending the root. He was probably the most harmonically sophisticated of the early western swing players. This Wyble style lick will work nicely over 2 bars in the key of A to the four chord D.
