Watch the Secret Weapon online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Country Guitar 8: Advanced Rhythm Principles

Secret Weapon - Lick 13 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from 30 Country Jazz Licks You MUST Know.

Eldon Shamblin might be the most unsung western swing players, but not because lack of exposure. Eldon was with Bob Wills longer than any other guitarist. He was the arranger, musical director, and handled a lot of the negotiations with clubs. So why is he overlooked? Cause no one ever notices the rhythm guitarist in The Texas Playboys. If you listen closely, you can hear that he's improvising constantly. He adapted his rhythm guitar playing from Count Basie's guitarist Freddie Greene. This way of playing lets you harmonize your moving bass lines so your chords take on a melody of their own. Eldon is also credited as solidifying the two beat feel for western swing music.

This example is over rhythm changes and is a common progression that many tunes are built off of. It uses inversions, ii-V, and passing chords.
