Watch the White Steel online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Country Guitar 5: Lick Vocabulary

White Steel - Lick 21 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from 50 Country Masters Licks You MUST Know.

This lick, White Steel, is inspired by Clarence White, who was primarily known as a bluegrass flatpicker. He was a huge influence on players like Tony Rice and Bryan Sutton. In the 1960s he ended up joining up with the psychedelic rock group The Byrds, and made some of the first alt country recordings. One of these is Sweetheart of the Rodeo, which is an incredible recording. His guitar playing ended up turning a lot of rock fans onto country guitar. If you want to hear his playing even more exposed, I would recommend checking out Live at the Filmore with The Byrds in 1969 where he is pretty much overplaying the entire concert, but he somehow gets away with it. Everything he does on that recording just sounds killer. This is one of his licks, kind of a faux-pedal steel lick. He's using a b-string bender to get the steel bends but we're going to be using our fingers. Clarence White is one of the players that really took bending strings in country solos to a whole other level.
