Watch the Strumming online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Country Guitar 4: Rhythm Principles

Strumming - Rhythm Concept 5 is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from Focus On: Western Swing.

Let's look at three strum patterns that will allow us to play many western swing tunes. First we'll start with carter style strumming. This pattern has bass notes on beats 1 and 3 and strums on beats 2 and 4. Any kind of fills you would while playing this type of strum would be bass note fills. This works great for a lot of the early western swing. Next, we'll play "four on the floor". Just strum swung quarter notes with accents on 2 and 4. If you want a strong chugging sound you can play swing eighth notes and accent on 2 and 4. When you incorporating fills as a rhythm guitarist on swing tunes use rhythm and crescendos rather than single fills. Once you're swinging you can't bail on the part. It will feel like the bottom dropped out.
