Funk & Blues Techniques - Concept 9 is a video guitar lesson presented by Johnny Hiland and is sourced from Ten Gallon Guitar: Rhythm.

Now let's do something a little different and go over some blues and funk rhythms. I like funk rhythm because I can use full barre chords with a thick pick to get more of a slap on the strings. Here I'm running a 6 and 7 chords back-to-back with some 6/9 or 9 chords and double stops added in to get funky but keep it country.

For the blues, we keep the mojo from our funk part over a few new rhythm parts. First, we'll play a walking bass line over an "organ" part played with the nails on the middle and index fingers. Next we'll go over a straightforward blues part that everybody knows, filling it out with full chords to make it sound richer. Then we'll create a rhythm part by mimicking what the bass player is playing, adding in trills and other flourishes. Finally, we'll go over the "slow blues," focusing on how to get the emotion out of the guitar by drawing out the chords in the rhythm.
