Pickin' 6ths: Study 1 - Introduction is a video guitar lesson presented by Jason Loughlin and is sourced from Country Guitar Survival Guide: Lead Edition.

On to picking sixths. This commonly used interval has been a building block of many of our favorite country guitar solos. It lies on the fretboard more comfortably than the thirds. A lot of the classic sixth licks come from lap steel players of the western swing era, mostly due to how convenient the interval lays under the slide bar in C6 tuning. A sixth is made up of two notes that are six scale steps apart. For this instrument study I'll be moving sixths up and down chord scales, using chromatic passing tones and harmonizing chord tones. Just like with the chapter on thirds, I will keep the picking pattern in the right hand the same for the whole example so you can concentrate on the different ways sixths can be played over chords.
