Watch the It's a Night Hawk online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Blues Guitar 7: Slide Approaches

It's a Night Hawk - Lick 21 is a video guitar lesson presented by Richard Van Bergen and is sourced from 50 Down Home Blues Licks You MUST Know.

For the next two licks we're going to dig into the slide style of Robert Nighthawk. He was born in Helena, Arkansas in 1909. In the mid 30's he moved to St. Louis where he played with Henry Townsend , Big Joe Williams and Sonny Boy Willamson. His first recordings were for Victor in 1937. Later he recorded for Aristocrat and Chess in Chicago. This lick is based on his song 'Friar's Point Blues'. I'll show you the intro and the accompaniment of a verse. His slide style is full of quarter notes, played with a deep vibrato. Similar to the way he sang. We're tuned to open E.
