Blue Tones Resolution - Lick 8 is a video guitar lesson presented by Tom Wolfe and is sourced from 50 Hard Bop Blues Licks You MUST Know.
This phrase demonstrates a core component of jazz improvisation - the resolution to a primary chord tone or color tone, that it is commonly referred to. The 3rd and the 7th of a chord are known as color tones. The 3rd gives the quality of the chord (major or minor) and the 7th gives the function of the chord (tonic or dominant). This lick starts with pickups ornamenting the flatted-7th, then an ornamentation of the flatted-3rd and resolving to the major 3rd of the chord creating a very musical resolution and what is referred to as 'making the changes' of the progression.
