Watch the Hubert! online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Acoustic Guitar 6: Lick Lexicon

Hubert! - B Lick 1 is a video guitar lesson presented by David Hamburger and is sourced from Fingerstyle Blues Factory.

As in Hubert Sumlin, longtime guitarist for Chicago blues icon Howlin' Wolf.  Holding down the B7 voicing – without worrying about fretting the high string as recommended by Mel Bay – makes for some pretty accessible minor pentatonic moves in measure one. But it's the slide into the fifth-fret A9 position and all that follows that summons up the sound of South Side Chicago in the 1950s and 60s. The way this lick folds a cool chromatic descent from the ninth, a tricky string-crossing open-string maneuver from the b7, and minor pentatonic sounds resolving to the major third into one measure of grooving, nonstop triplets makes it one of the all-time worth-knowing turnaround licks.
