Watch the The Sliding C7 Shape online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Acoustic Guitar 6: Lick Lexicon

The Sliding C7 Shape - D Lick 3 is a video guitar lesson presented by David Hamburger and is sourced from Fingerstyle Blues Factory.

The syncopated approach to this D7 voicing comes from a lick I remember watching Roy Book Binder do when we were both teaching at the National Guitar Workshop back in the 1990s. It was a lick I'd heard on his records, but to see him do it up close, when he was just sitting around picking on the patio before the evening concerts started, was about the coolest thing I could imagine at the time. I'm not sure if he rocked his ring finger over to the 6th string for the low A bass note or just used the open 5th string like I'm doing here, but I love the sound either way. I also think this is such a great way to get a D9: fretting the whole D7 chord, and then having the open E string, the 9th, ring out on top.
