Watch the Straight vs Swing Impact online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Play Acoustic Guitar 5: Fingerstyle Approaches

Straight vs Swing Impact - Demonstration is a video guitar lesson presented by Adrian Legg and is sourced from Fingerstyle Revisionist: Origins.

Once we have our right hand finger strokes working in the right order and combination, we need to get some rhythm into them; specifically the difference in feel between swing (or compound time) and straight (or simple time).

In compound time, the main beat subdivides into three, and in simple, it subdivides into two. That gets more complicated later on, but this basic principle is good enough for now. Thus, the same phrase in compound or simple either swings or marches.

In this workout, watch out for the hammer-ons with finger 1 on the left hand that happens simultaneously with the thumb stroke at the start of bars 2 and 4. It's actually initially quite difficult to share attacks between right and left hand fingers, and worth practising very thoroughly as it occurs often in fingerstyle.
