Watch the Set List & Song Choice online guitar lesson by Livingston Taylor from The Stage Performance Playbook

Shows have a flow, they have an arc, they have a direction. One of the things that happens in our concern is very often we push forward too quickly. I was watching the group Phish.

They're a group out of Vermont and they're sort of in that Grateful Dead vibe and it was fascinating to watch them. I was at the Somerville Theater and watched them do their long, improvisational set. And the audience was with them, and I saw something remarkable. The audience wanted them to go right now go, they wanted to be high off the musicality, but Phish didn't go.

They would wait a bit, and what they would do is they would bring the audience a little bit up and then settle it back down again a little further over, settle it back down again, and eventually they would slosh that water back and forth, not dissimilar to a canoe filled with rain water by the side of a lake where you can't lift it at once. You slosh it back and forth, slosh it back and forth. Go a little and wait till all the pieces are ready. Wait till that audience is just primed to go. But you decide when that water gets spilled and then all of a sudden there they go. Great. They're in that ecstatic moment, and then you back it off.

You do that many ways. You do that by the choice of songs, by being up tempo, going down tempo. Have the ability when you're doing your set to call songs that would be appropriate at the moment. Don't lock yourself in to one direction and be inflexible with that.
