Watch the Smiles and Smiles To Go online guitar lesson by Larry Carlton from 335 Hits
"Smiles and Smiles to Go" from the Alone But Never Alone album, 1986.
I wrote Smiles at the keyboard. I had never played it on guitar. I wrote it at the keyboard, did a demo, came up with the bass line, added that to the demo - but prior to the master recording I had never played Smiles on the guitar. So I was under the impression that I still needed to come up with a guitar melody on top of my keyboard part.
Well, when I played the demo for the guys at the session and I admitted, "I may still have to come up with a lead part for the song, guys", it was Abraham Laboriel Sr. who looked at me and said, "Larry, that's [the keyboard part] your melody." He recognized how hooky it was and how perfect it worked against the bass line.
So that night was the first time I played "Smiles and Smiles To Go" on the guitar and that became the master take. Thank you Mr. Laboriel!
Here's how I play "Smiles".
