Watch the Bending, Ex 6 online guitar lesson by Larry Carlton from 335 Blues
In the first video, exercise 6, watch my hand position to see where whole-and half-note bends fall in this C scale at the 5th fret. Notice also that I'm picking the notes when I relax the bend - not just letting the note sound without an attack.
In the next video, we're back in the key of E now, bending on the 2nd string.
Unlike Exercise 6, exercise 7 takes us out of position to bend scale notes. You'll also notice what a huge difference string tension can make as you're asked to bend on the top two strings. To goose that 1st-string A (5th fret) up a whole step, I play it with my third finger instead of my first finger. This way, I can get the strength of my first two fingers behind the bend. If I were playing it with my index finger alone it wouldn't have the support required to pull it off properly and play it in tune.
