Watch the Blues Motifs online guitar lesson by Larry Carlton from 335 Blues

A short musical phrase or idea, a motif, can establish the foundation for an entire solo. These lessons illustrate how a solo can grow by working with a motif and then playing it in other positions, using other harmonies, and adding slight nuances.
A good motif is like the first brick in a solid foundation. Put it in place and keep stacking bricks until you've built something beautiful.
Of course, you don't have to stay glued to one motif for an entire solo. For the musical example in Video 2, each new motif sets up a theme to be expanded on.
