Watch the E Rockabilly online guitar lesson by Johnny Hiland from Ten Gallon Guitar: Intros, Outros & Turnarounds
This is some fun territory - we're jumping into some rockabilly in E. This makes me instantly think of Danny Gatton. Danny's my biggest guitar hero of all time, and I learned so much about rockabilly from listening to him. So, if you haven't picked up some Danny Gatton music, you sure need to.
What we're doing here is a sort of long 5 intro. We'll go into B with some pick up notes, and then it stays there until it goes to the 1 to bring the singer in. That may be a little scary, but don't worry, it's a lot of fun once you get into it. It's definitely moving and quick, so just hold on to your hat and make sure your boots are pulled tight.
We're supposed to have seven beats in on this, which sounds weird at first. You could also count it just 1, 2, 3... if that works better for you. When you're at home practicing this stuff, before you go to your band gig, finding the way you like to have things counted in so you can tell the drummer. Knowing your own preferences really helps.
