Watch the Finding Your Sound online guitar lesson by Paul Brown from Smooth Jazz Handbook

Finding your own sound is very important and having a distinct style and sonic thinking that people can hear immedicately is difficult to do sometimes but it is really an important part of this puzzle. I prefer to play a jazz guitar which is basically an arch top acoustic guitar with a pickup. In the old days they used to put a microphone in front of these that had a scratchier sound. I use the front pickup on this guitar and flat wound strings. They really have a lot more warmth to them which really goes along with my sound. With the thumb and the octaves the flat wound stings are real important. In terms of effects, I really don't use a lot of effects. I discovered early on that I really wanted to hear the sound of the actual instrument box. If you use effects it sort of covers up the initial sound of the box.
