Watch the BeBop Scale online guitar lesson by Tom Dempsey from Jazz Scales Handbook

Bebop has very distinctive sound in the improvised lines and the rhythm of the music. Much of this sound is rooted in the presence of chromatic connections.

In this lesson, I'm going to show you a scale that has come to be known as the Bebop Major scale. You'll discover by turning what would normally be a major scale into an eight note scale with chromaticism between the fifth and sixth degrees were able to capture that sound melodically and rhythmically. I'll show you the scale here in a two octave form in seventh position. As soon as you start playing this scale you'll feel like you're speaking the language of Bebop.
