Watch the Diminished Scale online guitar lesson by Tom Dempsey from Jazz Scales Handbook

We're now going to move into our first of two symmetrical scales. The Diminished scale is a very important scale for any musician to know - it's based on a symmetrical pattern of alternating whole and half steps.

In this lesson, we'll look at the construction of the scale along with showing you a way to play a two octave fingering of the scale. As always, we'll relate the sound of this scale to its parent harmonic sonority, the diminished 7th chord. This scale has a lot of possibilities of application, so getting familiar with its structure is very important.
