Watch the Mixolydian Scale online guitar lesson by Tom Dempsey from Jazz Scales Handbook

Now it's time for a completely different sound, the Mixolydian mode. This mode is derived from the fifth degree of the major scale. You'll remember that the V chord in any major key is the dominant 7th chord. Therefore, this mode can be used to play over dominant 7th chords. I am going to show you a two octave pattern for the mode, and as always, I'll relate it to the sound of its parent chord. This is going to have a far reaching impact on your playing as the dominant 7th chord is present in all keys.
