Watch the Lydian Scale online guitar lesson by Tom Dempsey from Jazz Scales Handbook

It's time for us to look at our second major mode, the Lydian mode. This is a very rich sound to get under your fingers and into your ears. You'll notice a similarity to the Ionian mode with one distinct difference: the presence of the #4 degree. This brings a nice tinge of dissonance and tension to your sound. We'll learn this also in 12th position with a two octave fingering. And as always, we'll relate it to its parent sound, which in this case is the Maj7#11 chord.
