Watch the Phrygian Scale online guitar lesson by Tom Dempsey from Jazz Scales Handbook

Our next mode is also built out of a minor sound, but this one has a slightly different character than the previous mode. Our new mode, the Phrygian mode, is built off of the third degree of the major scale. Because our III chord in a major key is a minor 7th chord, the parent chord associated with this mode is also a minor 7th chord.

But, we'll discover in this lesson that because of the unique intervallic construction of this mode we get a sound that many people associate with Spanish music. It has a very exotic sound. This mode will be played in this lesson in 12th position, and as always, we'll relate it to its parent chord sound.
