Watch the Dorian Scale online guitar lesson by Tom Dempsey from Jazz Scales Handbook

From Miles Davis' recording Kind of Blue to John Coltrane's recording of Impressions, playing in a modal fashion is an important concept to understand. In this lesson, we'll look at the mode that is commonly associated with such tunes as "Impressions" and "So What", the Dorian mode.

I'll show you a two octave fingering in 7th position and show you the arpeggio of the parent chord, the minor 7th chord. As you work through this lesson you'll start to gain a better understanding of the modes and how they relate to their derivative harmonic sonorities.
