Watch the Diminished Lick online guitar lesson by Tom Dempsey from Jazz Scales Handbook

One of the great musicians of bebop, who often gets co-credited with being the founder of the music, is trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy's playing evokes the spirit of bebop in all of his lines. What we have here is similar to a classic Dizzy line.

In this musical example, I show you how to use a sequence with the diminished scale to play over a dominant 7th chord. When this is done, you're not only able to bring out the sound of the dominant 7th chord, but you also end up inserting the sound of the b9, #9, and #. Bringing in that tension can help to bring some new dimensions to your lines.
