Watch the Insights online guitar lesson by Gil Parris from NYC Rhythm & Blues

The third song on this disc is the title track from my record, "Blue Thumb," one of my more straight ahead jazz-oriented releases. I break down the head, which is based on sliding diminished chords. I'll also show you how these diminished chords can be used to harmonize scales for soloing. The head is interesting in that it involves three distinct articulations: using the thumb; plucking with fingers; and picking. In the comping section, I'll show you how to utilize thirds to create a percussive rhythm part, as well as some fresh minor six chord voicings. There will also be some discussion of tritone substitutions and turnarounds to push the soloist into the next chorus.
