Watch the Minor Blues Progression online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Jazz Progressions

When this progression becomes familiar enough to layer some embellishments or tensions over the individual chords, you could use any of the four melodic or harmonic minor substitutions over any of the dominant chords.

To subtly alter the flavor of a cadence, another option involves playing over the bar line to create asymmetrical phrases as opposed to a two or four beat phrase.

Any progression (including this one) becomes familiar over time, and you will recognize portions of this sequence in many other tunes.
