Watch the Minor Blues Progression online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Jazz Progressions

The addition of the major 6th and 9th intervals to the I and IV minor here expands the basic minor tonality in subtle but nice ways.

Playing the relative major (ionian and lydian) will give you access to those intervals.

I'm trying to create some interest here by using wide intervals, playing some of my ideas through three octaves, and mixing triplets, 1/8th and 1/16th notes.

As more complex sounds are later layered over the simple harmony played here, the basic chord tones are still referenced to ground the embellishments and tensions.
