Watch the Major Triads online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Jazz Improv

The more dissonant sounds used here have been commonly employed in modern jazz for at least forty years. If you're not familiar with these harmonies, it may take a little longer to acclimate yourself to the sounds. Mixing some of the harmonic and melodic minor substitutions together with the triads can produce some interesting results (i.e., E major triad and A melodic minor/C major, or G major triad and E harmonic minor also over C major).
