Watch the Putting it Together online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Jazz Improv

Notice the use of implied V chords here (i.e., G7 alt to C mi, C7 alt to F mi), diminished major 7th chords as altered dominant chords, broken arpeggios with the octaves dispersed, and playing over the bar lines (essentially articulating 3 or 5 beat phrases to make the 12 bar blues feel less symmetrical). I'm using some ideas that I picked up by osmosis listening to pianists like Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans, ideas like separating notes out of the chord, inner voice movement, using double stops and developing a rhythmic vocabulary as an accompanist.
