Sometimes I'll use a half diminished chord/scale/arpeggio in place of a minor chord if I want a darker sounding minor tonality. You may recall from an earlier video in the course that I also used Ionian/Lydian arpeggios a b5th above to generate Locrian sounds. Combine Gb Ionian/Lydian with Eb melodic minor over C half diminished, and also consider Gb major and Eb mel mi voicings as C half diminished chords. I will use all of the notes of a C half diminished scale (b2, maj 2 from the mel mi a minor 3rd above, b3,4,b5, b6, b7, b9, 9 is the same as 2, 11, b13) to create unusual half diminished voicings.
