Watch the Melodic Minor online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Jazz Improv

Wayne Shorter's "Ju Ju" has a long opening section based on the whole tone scale (in the key of B). To improvise over that chord, I'll play E and F# melodic minor to generate ideas that articulate that harmony (plus the perfect 5th) without locking me into too many whole tone patterns. Any dominant chord that has a raised or lowered 5th can be moved up and down the neck in whole steps and still relate back to the original chord/key (the alterations will change as the chord is moved), just as diminished chords or dominant chords with a raised or lowered 9th can move up and down the neck in minor 3rds. Listen to Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane for creative applications of the whole tone scale.
