Watch the Extended Chord Sounds online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Jazz Improv

When combining difficult new chord shapes in a cadence or chord melody, I initially move one or two notes as a way to transition smoothly. I prefer the more pianistic sound that results, and the process is also easier physically. The extended fingerings that I'm demonstrating here are best used on medium-slow tempo pieces where the chords can be held/sustained for at least two beats. When you begin to develop a pianistic approach to chords on the guitar by learning some extended voicings, you will gravitate towards this sound and incorporate the concept into some of your chord melodies/arrangements and single line playing (the lines that can be generated from chord shapes).
