Watch the Embellished Melody online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Chord Melody
The embellished melody adds some simple fills and ornamentations to the original theme. I developed these small changes and additions to make the piece work better when playing it solo, but I found that I also now use the embellished version when I perform the tune in a group setting.
Notice that I'm repeating some of the chords in the arrangement to fill up the space a bit during the melody. I'm also isolating bass notes and playing some broken arpeggios to create more rhythmic activity and generate some momentum. I've experimented with a variety of tempos for this tune, eventually settling on the relatively slow one that you hear me using here. Given the kind of bluesy laid-back feel of the melody, I think this feels the best.
