Watch the Embellished Melody Breakdown online guitar lesson by John Stowell from Modern Chord Melody

Embellished Melody Breakdown The breakdown of the embellished melody offers some ideas that can also be applied to interpretations of melodies in a general sense. As creative improvising musicians, we can expand or contract a phrase to play over a bar line. The resulting asymmetry that is created is very attractive to my ear. On "Jasper..", I've also added a few notes or phrases that are not part of the original melody, but which suggest the chord quality. This kind of embellishment has been going on in jazz since Louis Armstrong. As to how much embellishment or rhythmic variation is appropriate is very subjective. You'll develop a set of musical parameters as you find role models in the great musicians that have come before us. I will often begin the process of interpreting a melody after I've played it a few times, using the values and standards I've developed over the years. As a guitarist, I place importance on "breathing" as I phrase a melody. I suggest that guitarists listen to singers and horn players to get a feel for the use of space in a melody or improvised line.
